    Triple Pos. Invasive Ductal Carcinoma

After chemo and Herceptin was started on Arimidex but stopped after 6 wks because side effects I had from Taxol were returning or worsening. Has anyone else in my situation stopped Arimidex and not tried any of the others? If so, what was your outcome and do you have any suggestions? I'm 66, Stage IIa. Quality of life is important to me.

I tried all 3 AI's and tamox before finally giving up!!! but I did endure them for 3 1/2 years.....I agree QOL is soooo important.....I'm 57 in a week and stopped the meds 3 years ago.....These meds reduce the incidence of recurrence, but do not guarantee it.....so I say, listen to your heart and do what feels best for you.....wishing you many years of NED!!!!

Misty...I felt I couldn't live a close to normal life with the hand and foot discomfort and extreme vaginal dryness (couldn't sit, sleep, walk comfortably) from the Arimidex. But I was stage IV and really wanted to continue living...so I compromised by taking a half pill of the Arimidex daily. So far it's working...I'm 5 1/2 years past diagnosis, and 4 years of clean tests. I believe the pills were just too strong for me. We do what we gotta do. Just so you know...my Dr does not approve of this...he wants me on the full dose....forever. Hope this helps you.

I can't imagine any good reason not to try another drug instead of Arimidex. You may be fine on a different drug and the odds of it helping you stay concer-free are huge, so it is owrth some experimentation to find the drug that is tolerable for you. Also, many people who are having side effects of these drugs are prescribed a "vacation" from the drugs and some find that when they start up again, the side effects are either gone or much diminished. Don't give up on these drugs without a fight; you've got decades left to live!

      Dear Misty,

Talk with your physician. There are 2 other drugs similar to Arimidex: Aromasin and Femara. They too can have the side effects you mention. There is then the old standby, Tamoxifen. I tried the first three (which are known as aromatase inhibitors) and the joint pain was intolerable. I am currently on tamoxifen. We need the pharmaceutical companies to come up with something better!!
