    What are some good ways to stay active for older patients? Is simply going on walks enough to make a difference?

      Hi buckhunter,

      I'm Aliza, a BC patient and the site's unofficial resident Medical Librarian. Walks are great exercise for the elderly as well as everyone, but swimming is terrific exercise as it doesn't stress the joints and it's aerobic as well.

      Bobby G's suggestion is also good (I think that's aerobic as well, but I'd have to research to be sure...;))

      Walking at a fast clip for 20-30 min several times a week is great exercise. I am 61 and I walk most days, take a Pilates class at least once a week. I also do yoga and have take Low Impact aerobics and QI Kong (similar to Tai Chi) the important thing is to keep active on a regular schedule.

      I truly believe that staying active during treatment has helped me stay stable and beat this.

      Get a dog. They are great companions when you feel down and they give you a great excuse to go for a walk every day. Mine take me for walks all the time.

      Walking is great. Other good suggestions made here, too. I think it's important that the person enjoy the activity so they stick with it. Some people like solitary activities. Some people like to exercise with other people. Some like structured activities like scheduled group exercise classes. Others prefer their activities are less structured. The person needs to find one or two things and keep moving.

      Walking is one of the best forms of exercise. You can do it at a pace you feel comfortable with, you can take a friend and chat, you can check out the world you live in, you can listen to music, you can contemplate (spy) on your neighbors........ And if you get tired, you can stop, have a coffee, sit on a bench, window shop.........its limitless. (Get proper shoes.... they make all the difference and don't be cheap about it.)

      Thanks everyone, I am starting to walk when I can. I just can't do much right now. Seems like I'm doing the snails crawl, but I will get better.

      Would you consider riding a bike? Or a trike? There are some pretty darn nice trikes - recumbent style - out there. And, you can go your own pace. And, you can even get a basket and haul stuff around - like groceries! So, you could get exercise and errands done at the same time! When I broke my hip, I rode a trike around during my rehab. I strapped the crutches onto the back of the bike (seriously - I did that), and away I went! I rode to work... to the grocery store, and more... If you want more info, just lemme know. I can get some info to you.

      AND... the bottom line is that whatever kind of exercise YOU LIKE is the right kind! Walking is great!!!! Biking is great!!! Swimming is great!!! So is yard work and more. But you've gotta like it or you won't feel like doing it!

      Start small... Increase little by little... SNAILS CRAWL is the perfect place to start. Take your time... If you're worried, consider consulting with a personal trainer who has experience working with folks with health issues... and possibly consider talking to a physical therapist!
