    What does it mean when symptoms are both hyper and hypo thyroid?

    I seem to have both, I don't swing one way or the other. Seems strange to me.

      Actually its not all that strange to have one but occasionally, show symptoms of another. Some patients are diagnosed with Hashimoto's disease which is a cause for hypothyroidism and does display bouts of hyperthyroidism. Some people have Hashimotos's disease but then also Graves disease which is characteristic of hyperthyroidism. As you say, it is with the symptoms that you see this trend but it is not all that unusual. Best of luck to you, Carm RN.

      My daughter has Hashimoto's and has problems currently with the flares of Hyperthyroid that cause havoc with her system. We are told that eventually it will start going both directions. If you look at how the endocryne system works you might get better idea of what it means. This is a good explination of the feedback loop that causes so many of the problems we experience :
