    What is adjuvant therapy?

My doctor says that I might be a candidate for adjuvant therapy? What is that? Has anyone experianced this kind of treatment?

It is therapy given after initial therapy or surgery. This adjuvant or maintenance therapy is showing great success in mopping up potential loose cells in the body after first line treatments or keeping cancer at bay from either returning or growing. Its a good thing.

      "adjuvant therapy (A-joo-vunt THAYR-uh-pee)
Additional cancer treatment given after the primary treatment to lower the risk that the cancer will come back. Adjuvant therapy may include chemotherapy, radiation therapy, hormone therapy, targeted therapy, or biological therapy." http://www.cancer.gov/dictionary?cdrid=45587

With his first cancer, my dad had lung cancer. His primary treatment was to cut the cancer out with surgery. They removed part of the lung. Afterward, they did adjuvant chemotherapy to make sure they got it all because there can be little tiny cancer cells still roaming around.

For LC adjuvant can be as high as a 10% improvement in survival. I had adjuvant ..I had everything but the kitchen sink. I took 4 more rounds of chemo every three weeks. And glad I did.

Adjuvant therapy is treatment after the standard treatment is completed. I had adjuvant chemo therapy after I had done the standard radiation and chemo. It was the "just in case" anything was missed therapy. Unfortunately for me the standard and adjuvant treatment didn't work, so they switched up the chemo drugs and then it did work. Now no evidence of disease found. Hang in there, you will get through this.
