What is everyone planning for New Years Dinner?

I am cooking up a pot of Black Eye Peas. They are supposed to bring Luck if eaten on New Years Day . Plus they are very yummy And the luckiest thing for me is they are right up there on the top of my must eat diet.

I love those traditions! In the Jewish tradition, at New Years (Rosh Hashonah - in September) we eat apples and honey in hopes of a sweet year. We also have a special round Challah bread, representing the continuity and cycles of life. However, I don't do any special foods for the secular New Year, and we don't have a special dinner planned.

We do the black eyed peas too and cabbage, corn bread cakes, lord knows I can use all the good luck I can get. We've done this for years, I always say it hasn't done any good, but who knows what would have been? Anyway, I like the peas and cornbread. That's a good enough excuse to eat them.

My husband is planning for both of us a dinner with shrimp - I love it. But I'm just not in the mood for celebrating. We had a huge discussion because he wanted to go to a hotel, to see the fireworks from the window and I just want to stay home and forget the whole world is happy. I know I should be happy, and I am, that chemo is working, but you know, it's like I am battling for life while everyone is celebrating life.

When I was a kid, the tradition was XXX & pork fo New Year's. Fortunately I'm far enough awa from my last treatment that nausea isn't a issue, so I'm going w/that old standby.

It will be a potluck dinner in my house. Can't wait to eat whatever everyone is bringing. I wasn't even aware that there was food for good luck. :)

I learned about the Luck part of of Black Eye Peas Paula Deen. I was fed through a tube for seven months during my treatment. I watched the Food Network the whole time and fanticized about what I would eat when I got through treatment. Paula did a show on black eye peas, and I have had them for New Years ever since. I think they must have brought me luck because this will be the third year I will have them. I cannot do the cabbage (little hard to digest) but I make up with extra bacon

In the south it is good luck to have black eyed peas, you eat greens so you will have money, cabbage, turnip, mustard or collard greens, either of these just so long as you have some . ;-)

My husband and I are going to make crab legs. I hope I can enjoy them. Just a nice, quiet evening at home, watching a movie, hopefully able to stay awake until midnight! I hope everyone's 2013 is better than ever!

carolchristao, I know exactly how you feel. So many times, my husband would say "Let's go -- or Let's do--". I would think to myself "doesn't he realize I do not want to leave the safe haven of my couch and blanket?" It was like I wanted to be left alone in my "Twilight Zone". Then, there were the times that I would "sacrifice" for him -- and it never failed that once I got out, I would get a change of attitude and it would end up benefiting me more than him (of course, I might not tell him that-lol). I also feel that I should be happy -- Last year, I dreamed of being where I am now -- I guess it is that part of our human nature that does not know enough to appreciate what we have. Anyway, my wish for you is that you find peace, hope and joy this New Years!!!!!
