Spitzoid Melanoma is named after a Spitz Nevus, a type of benign juvinile melanoma. It is one of the most difficult to diagnose lesions because it shares the features of a Spitz Nevus. So it is hard to differentiate histologically and because ther are many subtypes like Spitz Nevus, Dysplastic Spitz Nevus, Spitz Nevus with Atypia, a melanoma that evolves into a Spitz Nevus and the De Novo Spitzoid Melanoma. Although it is hard to make the diagnosis the treatment and outcome is the same as it is for any other melanoma. It has a distinctive spindle cell quality seen in a Spitz Nevus melanoma. I hope this helps clarify it. Best of luck, Carm RN.
