My mother was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer, was given estimate of 6 months to live with or without treatment. she chose to not take treatment. She lived about 8 months. She was in pretty good spirits the whole time, had a few set backs along the way, she would start coughing up blood. We had a breathing machine, treatment type that is for people with breathing problems. One of the medicines was great for stopping the bleeding. She slowly went down hill, and in the end, in a 2 wk period she just started sleeping, hospice nurses had given us a medicine routine to give her. She was quite, didn't suffer and just drifted off. Much more peacefull than I was afraid it would be.
Best of luck to you, the end is not as bad as what you might be expecting, we went through this with our Dad too, took care of both of them at home in hospice, lost both in a two year period.
