What song lyrics best express your experience with cancer?

Actor Bonnie Franklin was recently diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. She is most known for her role as the mother in the 1970's-80's television sitcom, One Day at a Time. Here are the lyrics from the theme song to that show.

This is it. This is it.
This is life, the one you get
So go and have a ball.

This is it. This is it
    Straight ahead and rest assured
You can’t be sure at all.

So while you’re here enjoy the view
Keep on doing what you do
So hold on tight we'll muddle through
One day at a time, One day at a time.

So up on your feet. Up on your feet
    Somewhere there’s music playing.
    Don’t you worry none
We’ll just take it like it comes.

One day at a time, one day at a time.

Interesting question... I never have associated any lyrics with my cancer, unless you count pre-diagnosis when my insides were singing "I Know There's Something Going On" by Frida... lol

Metallica's "Ride the Lightning" is about a guy waiting to be executed in the electric chair but I would always be singing the song in my head during chemo treatments-
      Wait for the sign
To flick the switch of death
It's the beginning of the end
      Sweat, chilling cold
      As I watch death unfold
      Consciousness my only friend
      My fingers grip with fear
      What I am doing here?
      Flash before my eyes
      Now it's time to die

It's an enthralling journey through the depths of metal mastery and a song that I find both charming and powerful:)

A song that comes to mind when I think about cancer in general is "Fix You" by Cold Play. I think it should be the anthem for all cancer fighters. If you haven't heard it, you should check it out. A sample of the lyrics:

When you try your best, but you don't succeed
When you get what you want, but not what you need
When you feel so tired, but you can't sleep
      Stuck in reverse

And the tears come streaming down your face
When you lose something you can't replace
When you love someone but it goes to waste
      Could it be worse?

      Lights will guide you home,
      And ignite your bones,
And I will try to fix you,

ticklingcancer that is a great song by Cold Play. I think you are right on the spot when you use it to express your experience. The one that best fits my experience is Sarah Beth by Rascal Flatts here are the lyrics:

Sarah Beth is scared to death
To hear what the doctor will say
      She hasn't been well
Since the day that she fell
And the bruises just won't go away
So she sits and see waits with her mother and dad
      Flips through an old magazine
Till a the nurse with a smile
      Stands at the door
And says will you please come with me

Sarah Beth is scared to death
Cause the doctor just told her the news
Between the red cells and white
      Something's not right
But we're gonna take care of you

Six chances in ten it won't come back again
With the therapy were gonna try
      It's just been approved
      It's the strongest there is
I think we caught it in time

      Sarah Beth closes her eyes
      She dreams she's dancing
Around and around without any cares
And her very first love is holding her close
And the soft wind in blowing her hair

Sarah Beth is scared to death
As she sits holding her mom
Says it would be a mistake
      For someone to take
A girl with no hair to the prom

Oh, just this morning right there on her pillow
Was the coolest of any surprise
And she cried when she gathered it all in her hands
The proof that she couldn't deny

      Sarah Beth closes her eyes
      She dreams she's dancing
Around and around without any cares
And her very first love is holding her close
And the soft wind is blowing her hair

      It's a quarter to 7
      That boy's at the door
      Her daddy ushers him in
And when he takes off his cap
      They all start to cry
Cuz this morning where his hair had been
      Softly she touches just skin

      They go dancing
Around and around without any cares
And her very first true love is holding her close
And for a moment she isn't scared

The song that makes me feel better is "Reach" by Gloria Estefan.

So I´ll go the distance this time
Seeing more the higher I climb
      That the more I believe
All the more that this dream will be mine

      If I could reach, higher
Just for one moment touch the sky
From that one moment in my life
      I´m gonna be stronger
Know that I´ve tried my very best
I´d put my spirit to the test
      If I could reach

      If I could reach, higher
Just for one moment touch the sky
      I´m goona be stronger
From that one moment in my life
I´m gonna be so much stronger yes I am
Know that I´ve tried my very best
I´d put my spirit to the test
      If I could reach higher
If I could, If I could
      If I could reach
      Reach, I´d reach, I´d reach
      I´d reach´ I´d reach so much higher

      I was diagnosed last September....

"Wake Me Up When September Ends" by Green Day

      Summer has come and passed
      The innocent can never last
wake me up when September ends

like my father's come to pass
seven years has gone so fast
wake me up when September ends

      here comes the rain again
      falling from the stars
      drenched in my pain again
      becoming who we are

      as my memory rests
but never forgets what I lost
wake me up when September ends

      summer has come and passed
      the innocent can never last
wake me up when September ends

      ring out the bells again
like we did when spring began
wake me up when September ends

      here comes the rain again
      falling from the stars
      drenched in my pain again
      becoming who we are

      as my memory rests
but never forgets what I lost
wake me up when September ends

      Summer has come and passed
      The innocent can never last
wake me up when September ends

like my father's come to pass
twenty years has gone so fast
wake me up when September ends

I think what im made of by Crush 40 shows a lot of how i feel about fighting cancer :) at least some of the lyrics espesily the first verse and the corus

      I don't care what you're thinking
      As you turn to me
Cos what I have in my two hands
Is enough to set me free
      -Set me free-

I could fight the feeling to resist it over time
But when it's just too much to take you sneak up from behind

Is it me, you said, you're looking for?
Let me show you who I am
And what I'm here for, here for

      Hey!

Try to reach inside of me
      Try to drain my energy
      Let me show you just
      What I'm made of
      Simple curiosity
Try to take a bite of me
      Let me show you just
      What I'm made of now

On your knees you look up
      Decide you've had enough
You get mad you get strong
Wipe your hands shake it off
      Then you Stand,

      Steppenwolf Magic Carpet Ride

Last night I hold Aladdin's lamp
So I wished that I could stay
Before the thing could answer me
Well, someone came and took the lamp away

      I looked
      Around
      A lousy candle's all I found

      Well, you don't know what
      We can find
Why don't you come with me little girl

There are so many as I listen to the annual fundraiser radiothon for (my) Roger Maris Cancer Center in Fargo, ND. Here is one I just heard that takes me back to radiation and chemo treatments...

I Won't Back Down by Tom Petty

      Well I won't back down
      No I won't back down
You can stand me up at the gates of XXX
      But I won't back down

No I'll stand my ground, won't be turned around
And I'll keep this world from draggin me down
      gonna stand my ground
      ... and I won't back down

      (I won't back down...)
Hey baby, there ain't no easy way out
      (and I won't back down...)
hey I will stand my ground
      and I won't back down

Bon Jovi's It's My Life was my "theme song." I set it as my phone's ring tone and always had it blaring on my iPod:

      It's my life
      It's now or never
      I ain't gonna live forever
I just want to live while I'm alive
      (It's my life)

Then, when I was halfway done my chemo treatments, I went around singing Bon Jovi's Livin' on a Prayer:

      Whooah, we're half way there
      Livin on a prayer
Take my hand and we'll make it - I swear
      Livin on a prayer

And, I was not a Bon Jovi fan until I was diagnosed, but these two songs just really called out to me.

After I was finished my treatments, the song that best summarized my entire experience was Seasons of Love from Rent. I had an amazing support system of friends, people I never dreamed would be there for me so now is my time to give back and help people the way people helped me:

      Five hundred twenty-five thousand
      Six hundred minutes,
      Five hundred twenty-five thousand
      Moments so dear.
      Five hundred twenty-five thousand
      Six hundred minutes
How do you measure, measure a year?

In daylights, in sunsets, in midnights
      In cups of coffee
In inches, in miles, in laughter, in strife.

      In five hundred twenty-five thousand
      Six hundred minutes
      How do you measure
      A year in the life?

      How about love?
      How about love?
How about love? Measure in love

Seasons of love. Seasons of love

      JOANNE
      Five hundred twenty-five thousand
      Six hundred minutes!
      Five hundred twenty-five thousand
      Journeys to plan.

      Five hundred twenty-five thousand
      Six hundred minutes
How do you measure the life
Of a woman or a man?

      COLLINS
      In truths that she learned,
Or in times that he cried.
      In bridges he burned,
Or the way that she died.

      ALL
It's time now to sing out,
      Tho' the story never ends
      Let's celebrate
Remember a year in the life of friends
      Remember the love!
      Remember the love!
      Seasons of love!

      JOANNE(while ALL sing)
Oh you got to got to
      Remember the love!
You know that love is a gift from up above
Share love, give love spread love
Measure measure your life in love.

I have always loved Tim McGraw - Live Like You Were Dying and now that I have cancer it hits me a little harder :(

He said, "I was in my early forties with a lot of life before me
And a moment came that stopped me on a dime
I spent most of the next days looking at the x-rays
Talkin' 'bout the options and talkin' 'bout sweet time"
I asked him, "When it sank in that this might really be the real end
How's it hit you when you get that kind of news?
      Man, what'd you do?"

He said, "I went skydiving, I went Rocky Mountain climbing
I went 2.7 seconds on a bull named Fu Man Chu
      And I loved deeper
      And I spoke sweeter
And I gave forgiveness I'd been denying"
      And he said
"Someday I hope you get the chance
To live like you were dying"

He said, "I was finally the husband that most of the time I wasn't
And I became a friend a friend would like to have
And all of a sudden going fishin' wasn't such an imposition
And I went three times that year I lost my dad I finally read the Good Book,
And I Took a good, long, hard look at what I'd do if I could do it all again
      And then

I went skydiving, I went Rocky Mountain climbing
I went 2.7 seconds on a bull named Blue Manchu
      And I loved deeper
      And I spoke sweeter
And I gave forgiveness I'd been denying"
      And he said
"Someday I hope you get the chance to live like you were dying
Like tomorrow was a gift and you've got eternity to think about
      What you'd do with it
What could you do with it
What did I do with it?
What would I do with it?

Skydiving, I went Rocky mountain climbing
I went 2.7 seconds on a bull named Blue Manchu
      And I loved deeper
      And I spoke sweeter
And I watched an eagle as it was flying"
      And he said
"Someday I hope you get the chance
To live like you were dying
To live like you were dying
To live like you were dying"

I am an avid music fan, played Drums and 'some' bass guitar for many years, with several groups, everything from country to bluegrass and Classic rock to modern rock. never been more alive. However that was before spine become so problematic that I had to stop. Music of most all genres, at the time whenever I listen to the song "Only God Know Why" by Kid Rock brings tears to me eyes. I realize that his song has nothing to do with cancer or death, but it just seems to fit my profile at this time.
