Who has used a life flight helicopter and how much was the bill?

Sweeties mom was flown here to Vandy, I'm just curious how wild the costs go. So far I've heard anywhere from 8k to 60 k.

My father was flown from one hospital to another hospital in the same system. The airlift was part of the system. Insurance paid most of the bill. I don't know what the co-pay was. I know if your insurance does not cover costs can be outrageous particularly if it is not from one hospital to another in the same system.

There are ways to get air transport on NeedyMeds. Some organizations offer this.

This was about six years ago. A friend was flown about fifty miles to a Chicago hospital and the bill was about 12k. Insurance paid for it.

Wow. Those costs are terrible. Someone posted here the other day about buying Care Flight insurance for $100 a year or so. Could be worth it!

Greg, doesn't she have Medicare? Insurance companies like Blue Cross contract with the providers to pay a lower price in order to get their volume of business. You've probably noticed the reduced amounts on your bills.

You could call and ask her insurance company if they cover the airlifting, and how much they cover. They probably know the price.

I'm not concerned in the amount she will have left to pay. She has Medicare and Bridgestone-Firestone supplement. I'm just in awe of the amount of the costs in all things medical care.

I can understand how you feel about the prices in the medical field. When my daughter had her first baby, two Motrin were billed for $80! That's nuts!

I've not ridden in a helicopter, but I've seen the claims for the providers. Air ambulance is EXPENSIVE. I've seen bills upward of $30K. Now granted, we have a large group out west, where the nearest city could be a few hundred miles away, and they bill by mile.

In 2015, my husband was flown by helicopter from Albany Medical Center to Westchester Medical Center, both in New York. It cost $57,000. Thank God my insurance paid for the entire bill!!!
