    Wondering if anyone has tried a Macrobiotic diet and if so, what they thought of it?

    I don't follow a Macrobiotic diet, but do incorporate some of it. Curious to see for those who do follow it, how it's going, what they like or don't like...

      I haven't tried the Macrobiotic diet. I have looked at a number of them and have been moving towards more raw and towards the alkaline diets as well as including some of the GAPS diet. I am not sure that including that much soy is a good thing for me as a cancer survivor. The GAPS diet utilizes fermentation like the Macrobiotic diet, but even more so than just soy. Both the GAPS and the alkaline diets limit grains, especially processed ones, more than the Macrobiotic. That what I can see from a quick look. I found the "Sexy Crazy Cancer" DVD and website to be quite inspirational.

      I have tried a macrobiotic diet and I definitely felt better and it was evident that I was healing from the inside out. I particularly liked Brendan Brazier's Thrive diet. It is raw, gluten free, soy free and vegan. There is a lot of prep work involved in these diets but I definitely feel it is worth the effort.

      Actually, macrobiotic is just a sexy word for the food pyramid, now fill your plate, balanced diet that the FDA has been promoting for years. A macrobiotic diet is based on grains, followed by vegetables, and then meat., same as the FDA recommendations. The problem is that various self proclaimed experts have added various gimmicks to the basic definition so now we have macrobiotic diets that no dairy products. no gluten, no meat, etc. etc. etc. So when you say macrobiotic diet to 10 different people, it is likely to mean 10 different things.

      The idea of macrobiotics has been around for a couple centuries, and the original Japanense-based theory (early 1900s), has a lot of focus on sea veggies, veggies and miso and other fermented soy. What's interesting about the original macrobiotic diet (I guess I'm not aware of any recent macrobiotic gimmicks - I would say they probably aren't actually macrobiotic) is that it isn't just about what you're eating, but how you're eating and preparing it. It's a lifestyle - listening to your body and paying attention, eating with the seasons, yin and yang (balance), quality of food, even how food is prepped, etc. There is a philosophy behind it. Definitely not something the USDA pyramid/my plate promotes. :) Also no dairy, which has always been recommended by USDA.

      I think any diet that promotes moving toward more clean, whole foods and lots of veggies is worth exploring - not as a short term diet, but as a way of life. I've found that I don't define what or how I eat as a certain diet - it changes anyway, depending on what's going on in my life - but I do instinctively use some of the macrobiotic philosophy because it works for me. I also think sea veggies kick a$$! :)
