We started hospice for my Mom today. It was May 21, 2013 that she was diagnosed so we are falling in line with the less than 1 year survivorship statistic. She did gemzar & abraxane and then xeloda and had minimum effect on her cancer but ravaged her immune system. She stopped treatment at the end of October and we had been waiting a clinical trial without any luck. She got a staph infection in her foot that entered her blood stream. While the drs have been able to somewhat control that, the bigger issue is the mets on her lungs, liver and kidneys is preventing them from functioning and she has started bleeding internally and they can't locate source. She is on high oxygen as she is having trouble breathing. Dr told us if she had a liver and kidney transplant she might get better but she is not a good candidate. The Dr asked that we switch from aggressive treatment to fight the infection to palliative/ hospice so she can have pain meds round the clock. While it was a painful decision, we opted for this since we had received confirmation that it was no longer an issue of clearing up the underlying infection given the mets were causing her symptoms and there was no way to right the ship. No matter how this plays out, I am committed to helping increase the odds for others fighting this battle.
