My brother-in-law's mother was treated at Hospice By the Sea http://www.hospice1.org/ during the end stages of her battle with esophagus cancer. The care was top notch -

I'd try to get her into a clinical trial. These can be found at clinicaltrial.gov.
A neighbor was 17 when diagnosed with Stage IV osteosarcoma ( bone cancer). They gave her no hope, and recommended hospice. She chose to get experimental treatment. She is now 25 and an ICU nurse. She had cadaver bone replace pert of a leg bone. She also got a piece of lung removed (where mets were).
Point is, while there's still life there is hope. Obviously not everyone beats the odds. But is it worth trying? A resounding YES

Alene, hospice can only be obtained with a physicians order. You cannot enter into it without it. In order for a doc to write that order he has to state that a patient has 6 months or less. If the patient has more and the doc does not renew the order that is fraud because insurance covers 100%. As for alternative care there is options. I work with gyne cancer patients mostly and I have found alternatives for those who were told there is nothing left to be done. If your friend is still in active treatment then hospice is not an option but palliative care is. Keep in mind that alternative meds are complimentary to traditional treatments if they worked alone they would be considered traditional and not alternative. Good luck, I have sent you my personal email if you need further help, Carm.

On Nov. 22, 2012 my best friend was diagnosed with cervical cancer that spread to her bladder and colon. She was given 6 mos. to 1 year to live. She wanted to try alternative treatment but not chemo or radiation. She moved in with her 85 year old father who didn't know what to do. So, he called in Hospice on Dec. 3. They immediately started drugging her and she was too incoherent to research alternative treatments for herself. I need to know how to go about getting her alternative treatment. I am running out of time. Suddenly, the Hospice workers are telling us that shee could go within the next few days. It has been only 3 weeks since her diagnosis. I need advice from anyone with any knowledge or experience with Hospice and how to get her into alternative cancer treatment. Thank you.
