Hi. i'm not quite sure how this site works, but i'm going to give it a try. my dad was diagnosed with ALL, a form of leukemia. I'm trying to do a little bit of research to prepare us for what to expect. He is already in the hospital and had his first round of chemo. Any advice or btdt experiences would be helpful. thank you.

You are doing great. One thing you might want to do is check out the "Find Peers" section on your home page (look on the right hand side). These will be people who most closely resemble your diagnosis. Additionally you can click on "people" above and then on the left hand side search under leukemia.

You can also post a question on the network. You can do this by clicking on the "Ask Network" link on your logged in home page or the "Questions" link at the top of this page. When you post needs/questions using our question feature, we route your question to everyone in the network who might be able to help.

Feel free to contact me by email by clicking on exchanging the link at the top of the page. I will be praying for you and your dad. Hang in there.

I was diagnosed with AML in 3/2011. I had 30 days continuous chemo. They told me I was in remission. I lost my job and health insurance and so 6 weeks later I needed 7 days chemo maintenance therapy and the hospital would not take state medical card so I went to WVU and it was my miracle! During my 7 days there, they collected samples from my siblings. A week later I was getting blood work done at local offices when they called with news that one sister and my brother both matched me. On July5/2011 I had stem cell transplant and have been cancer free since 4/2011. The staff there was wonderful, I was there 42days, it was supposed to be 100 days but mine took fast and I am 100% donor cells now. In my experiences I turned 45( i am a nurse), I have lost my job, hair, and recently my teeth, chemo ruined them I now have dentures. Everything I have been through and lost is worth it because I now get to watch my grandchildren grow up. With leukemia people think its just a cancer, but it's not like a tumor, this goes through your entire body. Not to lessen other cancers, they all have their different peaks and lows. My mother had breast cancer, my sister passed with cervical cancer. WVU hospital was wonderful, they take care of you as a whole person, not just the cancer. It's wonderful to know the have everything from psychologists to massage therapy at YOUR disposal, they help with everything. The nurses were the best I have ever seen. Feel free to contact me , anyone. It's almost summer, I intend on vacation at beach, camping with grandchildren ... I want to live and enjoy it all!!
