Oh No: Apparently the lumpectomy site wasn't infected as was thought. By the next Monday the skin had died and fallen away and I had a hole in my breast about the size of a quarter. I could see directly into the lumpectomy cavity. Surgeon assures me it will grow back and not leave a sink hole; not sure I believe him.

Oh No (Cellulitis): 29 June 2013 Two days after re-excision & duct removal the area around the wound appeared to have a slight blush; not red, just a little flushed looking. Then today I started having leakage (clear w/a little blood), and went in to the ER to have it checked. They diagnosed cellulitis and gave me oral antibiotics and an appt w/my surgeon for Monday. Hope the meds help. The on-call surgeon says if not, they'll admit me for IV antibiotics until the infection clears.

Procedure or Surgery (Surgery): 26 Jun 2013 Had re-excision of original lumpectomy site to get better margins AND removal of the duct that was found to be positive for DCIS. That meant removal of the duct and a portion of the nipple. Since the wound from the first surgery healed so well (there was no scar near the areola at all!) I felt pretty good about the chances of having a normal looking nipple afterward.

Oh No (Misdiagnosed): Duct biopsy was ruled clear during surgery but found to be cancerous later in pathology lab, so back to surgery next week. Close margins on lumpectomy, so they'll also revisit and take a little more tissue out of that area at the same time. On the plus side though, nodes were clear!
