I was diagnosed in May 2011 with Stage IV squamous cell carcinoma, base of tongue, and surgery was not an option due to size and location of the tumor. All I can say is that it is going to a be a hard road, but follow your doctors' advice, keep as healthy as you can, and don't be afraid of having to get a PEG tube. Mine saved my life because I could not eat after the radiation started. Recovery will also be hard but it's worth going through XXX and being able to appreciate every day. I've had two PET scans post treatment and all is clear. Good luck and keep in touch.
