oh my goodness, this is so similar to my situation! I was diagnosed this January and I took the semester off of college. It was supposed to be my last semester so I was very disappointed that graduation would be postponed for a year but now I'm happy that I made that decision.

Anyway, I'll be returning to school next month as well. However this time I decided to just go part time and to live at home. I only had 4 classes left to graduate so I'll be taking 2 in the fall and 2 in the spring. I think that'll make it much easier on me. Can you go part time instead of full time?

I'm also going to be living at home instead of in the dorms. It'll be about a 2 hour commute each way so that will be a huge hassle but I'd rather be home, honestly. Plus, all of my doctors are out here anyway. Is that an option for you? If you can get all of your classes scheduled just 2 or 3 days a week, maybe that could work for you?

Academically, I'm still scared to go back because I feel like I've forgotten everything! I said I would study for my future classes during my time off (because I had all the syllabi) but seriously, who wants to study hard while they're going through chemo?? Not me! I may start to study and review some material before classes start though. Are you going to be doing that?

Be assured that you will find the determination and strength to phase back into your academic routine. Just keep a positive attitude and pace yourself so that you do not stress your body. You are a "Survivor" and there is nothing too difficult for you now. I wish you the very best.

Hi annroseu, My heart aches for you as I read your story...your feeling anxious about returning to school. It reminds me of a book that I read 3-4 years ago called, "Perseverance...True Voices of Cancer Survivors." It has 20 stories of young cancer survivors of different ages 6-24. I thought of this book for you to read. Each story in the book is the voice of courage, strength. and hope. The title "Perseverance" is defined in the book as "what it takes to cure cancer." I once read somewhere that persistence and determination are greater qualities in a man/woman, than talent and education; because the world is full of unemployed, derelicts, who are talented and educated. As Greg said in his answer to your email...challenge yourself and move forward. If we continue to regress we will never see what lies ahead. Which reminds me of another saying I heard on TV lately..."the further you can look backwards, the farther you can see forwards." Okay enough of the sayings, and quotes, and books. You yourself need to decide to take that step forward. Even though most of us, on WhatNext, are your senior we can relate to you and the decision that lies ahead. Each one of us have all faced similar decisions in our lives. The difference is in the age when we were diagnosed with cancer. Okay...one more story. One of the gentlemen on WhatNext was diagnosed 13 years ago with stage IV pancreatic cancer, and was given a 3-5% chance of making it 5 years. When he was told that low % of survival, he told his doctor..."just count me in." He went further and said to the doctors..."someone has to be in that %, so me why not me." That man annroseu was, and is...me. Do yourself a huge favor and take that move forward. The only other thing that all of us on "WhatNext" ask of you is: when you go off to college to finish your studies, please keep in touch with us, and let us old foggies know how you are doing. God Bless you annroseu, and the best of luck to you.
