Decision Point: Although mother never said it aloud, I knew she had an idea that cancer was a lurking possibility when all the physical changes began to take place.........losing weight, sense of smell&taste changed, jaundice, etc. I am child #5 of 7. Because I am a nurse, I was sort of elected by my siblings to be the bearer of the boulder of facts. The sequence of events and diagnostic tests, unfortunately, did not draw a clear picture for her.
My mother was told by me what her diagnosis was and that the cancer had already spread to other organs in her body. She said, "I would never have even dreamed that this is what I'm facing. I guess it's a good thing we don't know what tomorrow brings." She decided to decline on any treatment options. She has said, as far back in time that I can remember, that she doesn't believe she could take being nauseous for any length of time. Mother is such a caring and compassionate person; all of her life, for all livng creatures. I am in tears because vomitting has begun. I pray that her suffering will not be prolonged and that I might be able to help her with some confort measures.

Oh No (Diagnosed): Mother had been fairly healthy (no regular medication regimen)up until the diagnosis.
Her mother had lived to 107; so I expected my mother would near the same age.
I live in Florida; my Mom is in Chicago. She was living in the same house we all grew up in, but was persuaded to stay with my sister in one of the suburbs after the diagnosis. I went to visit last month, and am going to return over the weekend.
This past month was a decided 'turning point' in the progression of the disease, and I believe the beginning of the spiral was both physical and mental/emotional. Mother has not been eating regularly (a very small portion of whatever she was willing to try--1/2 of one egg or a tablespoon of noodles with broth; sometimes simply a cup of hot water for the entire day). Although we have been blessed by her presence for the past year, I still am having difficulty facing the realities of her nearing the end of life.
