I was diagnosed with 2.7 size kidney cancer (RCC) in Oct 2011 stage 1 and in Jan 2012 had 1/3 of my kidney removed. I have had 1 follow up in May 2012 and all was good then. I have notice on this site that some of you with RCC receive Chemo treatments I am not nor has my doctor said I should.

I would like to know some thoughts about this from those whom may have had stage 1 RCC

      H Bobcantonga,

We have several people on WhatNext who have been affected by kidney cancer. I'm sure you'll get some feedback soon.

I can tell you that my mom had kidney cancer. (Her user name on WhatNext is moonshell). Her mass was contained within her kidney, she had the whole kidney removed and she's in the clear now. After some recovery time - she's totally back to normal!

Also - I used to work with the National Kidney Foundation (NKF, http://www.kidney.org). You can have a completely normal life with just one kidney. The NKF is a terrific resource and can provide you with any other background about this.

Thanks - and keep us posted!

Let the docs guide you on the surgery.

My tumor was 4MM in size when they went in for it. I had a partial kidney done in May of 2010 and spent about 6 weeks recovering.

Do lots of walking and exercise you will be tired for a while after surgery but it does go away. In my case I was also able to work from home but limited my time.

In this day and age they can do arthroscopic kidney surgery to as well to remove small tumors but in my case they weren't sure if it was cancer or a cyst so we opted for taking part of the kidney. The end result is I still have two functioning kidneys.

Unfortunately for me I was on of a extremely small percent (cant stress this enough a SMALL percentage) of folks who had the cancer metastasize prior to surgery and there was no way to tell until it showed up elsewhere.

Please make sure when they do follow up CT scans after the kidney surgery (every 4 months for me) and that they do them from neck to knees just in case it does escape.

Lots of folks have never had to look back once they have had partial surgery and have had remission.

good luck with this let us know how it goes.
