The way it was explained to me that helped me understand the need for both (especially after surgery to remove all the cancer) is this; Chemo therapy kills any cancer cells that might still be left behind and radiation singes the ground to make sure nothing can grow there. It is not a scientific answer by any stretch but it gave me something I could understand.

I had triple negative breast cancer. Stage 1 with no lymph node involvement. Had a lumpectomy with clean margins. Had 4 'big gun' doses of A/C and then 12 of Taxol followed by 30 rads treatments. 11 months later another tumor, also triple negative was found within 1/4 inch of original tumor site, exactly where the 'boost' of radiation was. While I understand that rads 'sterilizes' the area so nothing can grow there ... that was not my experience. Had a lumpectomy again and 8 more treatments of platinum based chemo and just had a bi-lateral mastectomy 2 weeks ago.

Oh, cswwhatnext I'm so sorry that you went through that! My breast cancer was actually caused by my radiation for hodgkins 25 years ago. The treatments are almost as scary as the disease. Almost and that's the part that makes these decisions so hard! I thought about skipping radiation but with stage III it seemed better to do it. Only time will tell I guess!
