Oh No (Just Diagnosed): As a women's health nurse, I was shocked to now be a patient receiving the news, sort of walking around in a daze. I happened to be at a visit with my pcp for something unrelated, and he reported the results of the pathology report (unsolicited--I did not even know the results were available yet and was expecting a call from the radiologist who did the biopsy). He was looking at the computer and just casually mentioned the results like he was reporting on the weather. I have an appointment tomorrow for a consult with breast surgeon and expect to learn if HER2, ER and PR positive as well as discuss treatment options. I don't have a large support network. I'm nervous.

I hope you have had your appointment and were able to get answers to your questions. I had to wait 3 weeks to get an appointment with my breast surgeon. Even though you are a nurse, if there is anything that you need help with, please don't hesitate to ask. Let us know how you are doing. Good luck. Take care.

I had my appointment with the surgeon yesterday, and felt like maybe I overreacted to the initial diagnosis--this surgeon seemed to indicate that I didn't have cancer since it is not invasive. At any rate, at Stage 0 (noninvasive) I was still offered options for treatment to decrease the likelihood of getting invasive breast cancer. I elected lumpectomy and radiation therapy over the mastectomy and reconstructive surgery. If there are others out there with DCIS, I would love to hear how the diagnosis was explained to you, and how you decided to approach treatment. Thank you!

I have DCIS. was told I have stage 1, I had alumpectomy, chemo, radiation and femara for 5 years/I switched up for a couple of months in there and bounced back to femara. my oncologist wants me to now go additional 5 years of meds. I am saying no way.i was counting the days. the side effects are off the chain. I cant do it anymore.the fear factor will always be there.
