ChrisHaas asked a questionColorectal (Colon) Cancer

Help! My sister has rectal cancer that has spread to the brain. Who are the top doctors in the country to treat this-at Mayo, M.D. Anderson?

Your sister's oncologist should be able to recommend top of the line doctors. In addition, many of the national cancer centers have a referral hotline to help you find the right doctor for your sister's care. Lately, different cancer centers have been specializing in different types of cancers so look at all your options.

Just keep in mind the cost and your sister's insurance coverage. Traveling to another part of the country is expensive and if your sister doesn't have out of area coverage, the bills from the care can get very expensive.

Many large cancer centers often will do a consultation and treatment plan and coordinate with a local hospital. This way you can stay close to home but often get the same care you would at a larger cancer center.

      HI:
I agree with Carol first you need to sit down and take a deep breath. Then call and set up an appt with her oncologist and ask them questions. I would make a list of questions to take with you and write down the answers. Sounds like she already has a lot going on so I'm sure they have very good Drs where you are at that will be able to help you. She is probably very tired from what she is going through now and you don't want to stop or change that treatment without talking to the Drs involved. Good luck to you and please let us know how you and your sister are doing.

I see you are in the Philadelphia area...is your sister? Dr. Weijing Sun is the top colorectal oncologist in the city. He's at University of Penn. Perhaps he can guide you.
