I am looking for people such as myself that has had a masectomy and reconstruction using the DIEP flap procedure? Can I ask what reconstruction you choose?

I had a double mastectomy and DIEP reconstruction in February of this year. I was thrilled to be offered this option over other traditional reconstruction methods. The recovery seems to be much harder ( I am six weeks out and still swollen) but upon waking up in the recovery room, I was already pleased with the results.

I am looking for people such as myself that has had DIEP flap surgery or reconstruction using this method after a masectomy. Do you know what your plans are yet?

Cammie, I am looking sor someone like myself that has had DIEP flap reconstruction. Do you mind if I ask what procedure you used if you had a masectomy?

I liked the surgery and the fact that I don't have implants, but since my size is almost a cup size smaller and a bit lop-sidded, I am considering getting the implants anyway. Which kinda defeats the purpose of the flap surgery to begin with. I had a full 6 weeks of recovery A 3 day intensive care stay and additional 2 day hospital after that to make sure the blood flow continued in the veins they moved into my chest. But if insurance continues to pay, I suppose I should continue to try and look my best? The worst part (as I am sure you know) is that the girls are not a "touch" kind of plaything now. They look like a pretty Picasso painting hanging on the wall, nice to look at but don't have any feeling. How long was recovery time for your implants? I hated the expanders as bad as you did, but I had to have them for 6 months until I could have the FLAP surgery. Those little suckers are hard as nails.

I've had the temp inplants since March of 2011. Since then I had chemo and radiation, so I couldn't have the permanent ones put in. Then I was just about to plan having it done in Aug. of 2011 then my jaw broke by itself, I wound up with a bone infection so I had to put it off longer. I'm finally having it done April2. My doctor told me the ones I'm having put in are softer, so really think about it you will feel better. I do about having it done. The recovery was only a couple of weeks.

I had a double mastectomy on 2/13/2012. Had DIEP reconstruction. So far it looks fine when I am wearing the bra ( the hideous sports like thing) but underneath is uneven and I am still sporting the patches. Very thick feeling banding at base of breasts. I have feeling at the collar bone but not much underneath. My stomach is still very tender to the touch and numb. I finally got feeling back from right underneath the breasts to about my belly button area. But below that to the incision scar nothing. Doctor said to massage daily and feeling will return. My next surgery ( nipple ) will be early summer. What does not look normal to you?
