OUCH! Hope your radiologist is good and numbs well before inserting the needle. I had ascites but the MDs did not want to tap. The pleural effusion bothered me more.
I did not have paracentesis but thoracentesis before and after surgery (6 on right, 1 on left). It took some time for chemo to kick in but once it did I was ok without tapping. The ascites was left to "disappear" on its own - several months.
      Good luck.

Hello, speaking from the vantage point of a nurse in oncology who specializes in gyne cancers, it is common for ovca patients to have more than one paracentesis. Most of my patients opt for a pluerex catheter to be placed so that they do not have to endure those painful procedures. Although most paras are not painful during the procedure. Patients are very sore for a few days after. I hope I have answered your question. Best of luck, Carm.

I have since 2012 ascites, the chemotherapy does not work. I had 2012, the first
paracentesis. I had many paracentesis with 3 to 5 liters. the distances between the punctures is getting shorter, about every 3 weeks. the last puncture was last week with a 9.5 liter.

Procedure or Surgery (Removal of fluid from abdomen (paracentesis)): 1-18-13 Started feeling bloated again at the beginning of the week so I emailed my oncologist who set up another paracentesis for Friday. This was my 6th one and it drained 2.5 liters and helped me lose 10 lbs overnight. I feel much better again. How many more will I need?

I never had the procedure, but I think you'll get more responses to your question if you post it under QUESTIONS. Copy the post, click on Questions and paste it in... I think more people will be along shortly

Drug or Chemo Therapy (Chemotherapy): 12-18-12 Round 2 of second treatment for recurrence. This time with carboplatin and taxol. The nurse had trouble inserting the IV, took them 6 tries. Now I am considering getting a port. Infusion took almost 6 hours. I hope it works.

      Hi,
Are you diagnosed with recurrent ovarian carcinoma? I am having a cystic mass in my pelvic region of 10 cm and my doctor suggesting for surgery then chemo and another doctor suggesting chemo then surgery. What happened in your case? Please help.

Decision Point (change of treatment): 12-11-12 met with my oncologist again today b/c I continue to bloat. He feels that the carboplatin/doxil combo is not working as my CA 125 went up from 1250 last month to 1620 now. Also, I continue to bloat and have abdominal pain. He set up another paracentesis for the next day and will change treatment to carboplatin/taxol. I agreed b/c bloating is painful while hair loss is not.

Procedure or Surgery (Removal of fluid from abdomen (paracentesis)): 12-12-12 Took the day off work to be drained again (No. 5!) This time only 1.2 liters were drained. But this time I feel some relief. I tried to get in to start chemo again, but the schedule at the clinic didn't work out.

Other Care (Hospitalization): 12-01-12 Started feeling very week and nauseated. I called the oncology on-call number, but the oncologist sent me to the nearest emergency room. I was running a fever and bloating again. I had another paracentesis which only drained O.5 liter and then went by ambulance to the hospital an hour away to spend the next 4 days. An infection of the abdominal fluid was suspected so I was put on an antibiotic. I also had a CT scan on 12-02-12 and another paracentesis (No. 4). This one drained 2.2 liters. I went home on 12-05-12, but felt I was starting to bloat again already.
