Procedure or Surgery (Ileostomy ): Very difficult to cope with surgery for the patient as well as family, it takes time to recover from the surgery as well as the emotional effects of it. Especially we did not know if it would be reversible or permanent....finding out it was reversible made it a little bit easier to accept. A bit of a learning curve how to change the bag and find the right type and a longer time for the patient to be able to change it themselves. I used to do it for my sister but approx. 2 1/2 months after the surgery she was able to do it by herself and has ever since. She just came back from a ski trip ....she can do pretty much everything with the bag....skiing, swimming, biking, going to the gym...it just takes getting used to....
