To me, the financial hardship is one of the most difficult issues. We have little control over this ugly disease or how people around us behave...etc..and we are totally stuck with lots of bills, which must be paid and add so much more stress to an already horrendously stressful situation.
But here are some things that we have done...(note..I am 52 and my husband, (age 68) of 22 plus years was diagnosed with colon cancer almost 3 years ago. He has stage 4, but doing well at a magnificent hospital here in Boston)
What I have learned is to ask everyone and go to every resourse you can..
First, call all of your utilities and other bills. See if they have an assistance program. Any company with interests may decrease or eliminate them. Some companies (gas, electric) may have programs for assistance.
Here is a wonderful site to get some help...absolutely an angel here on earth...
      http://www.cancercardxchange.org/
(she also lists places where you can financial assistance on her site)
Request gift card - we are the recipient of this kindness (and in return advocate for others to donate)...when you read this site , you will be moved...and blessed...please get in touch with them.
Get in touch with the human resourse department where she is being treated, as well as any and all insurance she has...ask for assistance...and if they tell you they have none, ask for the manager of who you spoke to...
Basically speak and ask to as many people as you can.
Call your town hall and see if there is a program to help. Call your local houses of worship and ask.
Do a search on the type of cancer and treatment she has...and see if there is help or grants (example,,, Colon Cancer Alliance offers a one time assistance, if eligable.)
Contact the American Cancer Society and Live Strong...ask if they can assist you or if they know where you can get assistance.
Call your State House and ask...
Ask any and all social workers involved.
Our hospital has parking...$10 each time and we go once a week, atleast. But we found out that if get a list of our appointments as a 'steady customer :) )...we get a discount of $6.00...so if this is your case, ask the parking garage if there is a discount.
Ask her nurses and doctors and volunteers.
And other patients :)...(probably your best resourse of all...)

Please make sure that you have her basic medical info as most places that offer assistance, will ask for proof...

And lastly, know that you are not alone...ever .....
      And best of luck!

As a nurse I hear this all the time. The best advice I can give you it to go to www.giveforward.com. This website will allow you to set up a page to raise money and it is free to do. I have referred many patients to this site and they have all gotten the money they needed. You can then make flyers up with the site or announce your page on facebook to get others to donate. A lot of charitable people go to this site to donate to strangers so the more your story affects them, the more they will be willing to help. Hope this helps, Good Luck!
