Has anyone ever heard of a tumor bursting? What does this mean?

I'm not sure how to answer your question. I don't mean to sound flippant but which word is it you are not understanding? A tumor is an abnormal growth of body tissue. Rapid cell growth or swelling can cause it break apart or burst.

Nancyjac, you are right, my question was a bit unclear. I was actually wanting to know if tumors burst and if so what would cause them to burst. My grandmother was told that the tumor on her rib had burst damaging her rib and causing her pain. Since I had never heard this I thought I would go to the community to see if this had occurred with anyone else and what they were told. Basically, I'm just scared and concerned for my grandmother and trying to understand as much as possible seems to be my coping mechanism. Thank you all for your feedback and support! :)

My appendiceal tumor burst and seeded cancerous cells throughout my abdomen. If the cancer is in a cyst-like structure, it can burst.

Does anyone know anything about the Cowles Cancer Clinic in Greendsboro, GA? My grandmother is considering treatment there.

I don't know how close Atlanta is to where you are, but Emory University has a medical program that has cancer research and treatment. I am currently being treated on the other coast at University of California Davis. I have found teaching hospitals usually Have good programs and clinical trials. Do an Internet search of the best rated cancer facilities in your area. I know you want the best for your Grandmother and wish you and her good luck on her journey.

Of course your grandmother is an extraordinary person and deserves extraordinary care. :-)

What I meant was that the care in a place like the Cowles Clinic can be very good and, probably, a bit more personalized than in a major research hospital. If things go well then your grandmother will probably be happier at a place like Cowles. But, when things go wrong, when the prognosis isn't good, or when the options sound awful, a place like Emory is more likely to have cutting edge treatments that can make the difference.

I might consider getting a second opinion frpm Emory anyway even if I planned to use Cowles.
