Other Care (Other): My wife Bernice has helped me get through the initial shock of hearing that I had cancer. Just hearing that out of the clear blue can be very upsetting. The initial reaction can easliy be one of "Oh, no! Why me?" One quickly seeks answers to all kind of questions racing through the mind. In that respect, a good urologist is paramount. Not only my doctor answered a lot of my questions, but I was able to seach the internet and gain much information. All of this, combined with my wife Bernice and our loving family, gave me strength to face what I must. I have always been a God fearing man, and this belief gave me much strength. I still remember a few of those sessions on the stool when I would literally sing out, "Be with me, Lord, when I am in trouble. Be with me, Lord, I pray." But make it I did with all of these care givers. I know I am not out of the woods and probably never will be completely, but God has given me some time and been with me and my family every step of the way. Even websites such as this can be a great help to those among us who need encouragment and a helping hand. God bless all of us who much bear up our Cross and walk after Him.

Radiation (External radiation ): The actual radiation treatments were painless. In fact, for three weeks I had no pain of any kind. Beginning the fourth week, I started having intense pain anytime my bowels tried to move and I had little or no control over my bowels. When they had to move, they had to move. The radiation caused radiation burn to my intestinal area which resulted in the pain. It impacted my life drastically. I was still working, but my bowels dictated when I could work and even the route I would take going and coming from work. I planned my route wherever I could find a restroom enroute. All in all it has been a rather rough go of it, and now some three years later, the pain has mostly gone but the bowel situation still determines what I do and when I do it.

Oh No (Cancer is back/Recurred ): I have had several Oh No's in the last four years or so. In 2008 I was diagnosed as having prostate cancer. My PSA count had gone from 5 to 55 in two years or so and I had a total of four prostate biopsies performed with none of the first three indicating cancer. Then on the forth one, it came back as an aggressive 8 out of 10 cancerous growth. Further tests (Praise God!) revealed that it had not spread to my bones or any other bodily organs. My urologist sent me for radiation treatment which included 25 external beam radiation treatments and 15 Novalis. The side effects were the toughest part of this treatment, leaving me with radiation burn, severe pain during bowel movements, and an inablility to hold it when I had to go. Not much fun but my PSA did drop to zero for quite some time. Then, after about a year and a half, the PSA started to creep up again and I took some harmone shots. The PSA went back to zero again. The harmone shots did cause me to have hot flashes (I got NO sympathy from my wife who simply said: "Now you know what I have been going through for years.") I went to see my urologist last week and my PSA has gone back up to 11. If things do not change when I go back for my next visit, I will probably opt for another harmone shot. I have learned to accept what I must and try to keep functioning as normally as possible. The second blow came two years ago when I was diagnosed with stomach cancer. Once again I was blessed in that it way detected very early. It was a very, very aggressive cancer and I feared that the surgeon would have to remove 3/4 of my stomach. But when he got in there to do the operation, he was able to remove a 3" wedge from the stomach and clamp it back together. In all I was only in the hospital four days and ab le to eat when I got home. God is good.
