Celebration (Other): Three days after I was discharged from the hospital after the surgery, I walked the "Relay for Life" with all my children and grandchildren. I was slow, but I finished the entire race.
I also wrote a book "Attitude is Everything, Winning my battle with lung cancer", documenting my experience. I had all my treatments performed at the Cleveland Clinic and they asked me to do a TV commercial discussing my experience, which I did. I owe my life to the doctors, nurses and technicians at the Cleveland Clinic.almost 10 years ago -

Procedure or Surgery (Lobectomy): After the chemo and radiation, surgery was performed to remove the upper lobe of my left lung. Four months after my Stage 3 Lung Cancer diagnosis, I was declared, Cancer Free.

Side Effects (Hair loss (alopecia)): My niece told me that her oncologist said 17 days after the start of her chemo, her hair would start falling out. She told me the same thing. Sure enough 17 days after the start of my chemo, I noticed my hair started falling out. I looked forward to getting a wig. I bought 2 wigs. One was just like my hair, the other was "funky".
I was also told the chemo could do damage to my kidneys, so the doctor suggested I drink lots and lots of water. He said if I didn't, I might need dialysis. I drank oodles of water because that scared me more than the cancer. I drank 8 oz. every 1/2 hour, every day,for the entire time I was receiving chemo. Result: No kidney problems.

Drug or Chemo Therapy (Chemotherapy and radiation combined): I had allergic reactions to the first two chemicals they tried. The third was the strongest they could use. I was told I would have terrible side effects, but as it turned out, the only side effect I had was loss of my hair. The radiation was simple. As long as I put Aloe lotion on the radiated areas, I had no burning or side effects.
