My journey started last June with DCIS in the right breast. After an MRI they discovered two clusters in the left breast the mammo didn't pick up. That made my decision for me to have a BL mastectomy. Didn't want to take the chance of it being cancer as well, which it wasn't, but still made the decision. Doctor thought I did the right thing. I had my first surgery in July then in August I had a partial reconstruction of DIEP flap. They took the fat from the lower belly and implanted it in my chest to make breasts. Doctor thought everything looked good. Only problem was I didn't. I had excess skin and tissue hanging under my arms with scaring that looked horrible to me so I made him clean it up. He did and things looked better, but I was so small I was not happy. I stand 5'7" and am slightly overweight so I looked like I had no boobs at all. Told him I wasn't happy and wanted implants. So had that surgery a couple of weeks ago and now I look like I have two tennis balls for boobs. Guess I should be thankful, but I am not happy with the way they look and I had to buy some bra shapers in order to get a bra to fit correctly. I suppose if I had been a movie star I would have gotten a good job like Angelina Jolie, but I'm not so I am stuck with what I have. I am still in a sports bra and will be for 4 more weeks before I can even think about bra shopping. The most painful operation was the implant one too. Isn't that funny? I am still having pain in the scaring area. Guess that might be a while before it completely heals, but I figure with the right bra and the shapers I can look normal under my clothing. I won't go through another surgery to make him fix it again. It isn't that bad so I just have to get use to it is all. Anyway, that is my experience. I should have gotten a second opinion from a Plastic Surgeon in Bellingham or Everett, but at the time I didn't think of it because everyone kept telling me what a good doctor he was. So get a second opinion before you do anything.

Had the right mastectomy 4 weeks ago, unfortunately huge hematoma. Skin is going to die, healing will be slow. No reconstruction now, because I was a smoker. They say you need to be smoke free for 12 weeks before they will reconstruct. So my surgical site is a mess (looks like road rash without the road). Then 3 weeks post op the GYN said have to take the only ovary now (no cancer!!). Laparoscopy went OK except the ovary was attached to my bowel. Let me tell you the "bowel prep is brutal!) Will be starting Chemo in 2 weeks. Between 16 weeks of chemo and 35 days of radiation then maybe reconstruction surgery. Time will tell.

Do your breasts look the same after the operation?
