Oh No (Diagnosed): The day I went back to my gastroenterologist a week after a colonoscopy, walking into the examination room, he asked me how I was feeling. I said that I was not feeling well. His response was, "of course you don't, you have CANCER." I felt like all the air had been sucked out of the room. He told me to make an appointment at the Cancer Institute of New Jersey for treatment.
I remember leaving that office thinking, "what do I do now." I did not want to be alone at that time. I called the Institute from my car, told the receptionist what had just happened and asked if I could come there now to see someone. She said, "you come here right now and we will take care of you." Those were some of the sweetest words I had ever heard in my life.
As soon as I walked into the building, I felt relief. It was calming, they gave me a cup of tea, some cookies and Sherri, the intake nurse, talked with me for an hour. By the time I left I knew who my oncologist would be and his nurse came to introduce herself to me. The reception, who I now know is Carmella, was right. They took care of me and they have been doing so for 3 years now.
