Other Care (Hospitalization): In November I had an auto stem cell transplant. Three weeks in the hospital followed by 3 months of building strength. Received complete response. That's not a cure, but no MM could be detected for 4 years.

Drug or Chemo Therapy (Chemotherapy): Thalidamide worked well, but it caused peripheral neuropathy. It was given with high dose dexamethasone (40 mg a day for 4 days, 4 days off, repeat). The dex lows were extreme, so I scheduled them for weekends as best I could. I took a day off work as needed. All my thinking/planning had to be done on the 4 days on dex because I felt so low the other days.

Drug or Chemo Therapy (Bone strengthening drugs): I used the 3 hour infusion time to relax. Occasionally I had to grade papers, but usually it was a time to read and nap. Loved that time!

Oh No (Just Diagnosed): Went to internist with another minor problem. The blood test he did showed high protein and, thanks to God, he knew to follow up with SPEP which indicated possible MM. A few weeks later, a hemo-oncologist confirmed MM using BMB. The first thing I saw on the internet was ''2-3 yrs survival". Thanks to a flurry of new medications beginning about the time I was diagnosed, I am leading a good life 15 years later.
