Radiation (External radiation ): Treatments are ok. Technicians are all so nice. Some redness and soreness and now numbness to area. I haven't burned yet!

I had numbness and pain after my lumpectomy and sentinel node removal. My radiation didn't start until several months later, so I'm pretty sure I can attribute my symptoms to the surgery. I still have some numbness 16 months later and tenderness at the site of the incision. I have been told by my oncologist that these symptoms are normal.

Yes, this sounds pretty normal. The nerves will eventually ‘kick in’ again and the numbness will lesson at both sites until one day you’ll realize it’s gone-could take months. As for the sharp pains, they will become less frequent but after 2 yrs I still get them occasionally. My PT told me to regularly massage the affected breast to alleviate pain associated with scar tissue-it works! Also she encouraged me to take the 5min every few days to do the recommended exercises to keep high range of motion, ward off any signs of lymphedema and frozen shoulder. Again, she knew what she was talking about!

A sentinel node biopsy could take YEARS to recover from the numbness and pain. Mine was in 2002, but it was several years. It has nothing to do with radiation, which usually has few side effects other than the "sunburn" it sounds like you have already. Even bathing my underarms was uncomfortable for me for years.

According to my doctor, the sharp pains are nerves regenerating.

Fifi, I hope you are seeing your doctor weekly during your radiation, but I'm concerned that you didn't discuss that with your doctor, as I think you would be reassured by your doctor's comments. We're always here for non-medical problems, but your doctor may need to check your skin. Best wishes.

Procedure or Surgery (Lumpectomy): Went better than I expected. Used Magseed technology to pinpoint tumor for surgery. Received results that margins are clear and no cancer in the lymph node. So far, so good.
