    HalfFull shared an experience

Loss (Lost loved one): My husband passed away at home on January 11, 2013. He made the decision to go on home hospice on December 14, 2012 when we went to his oncologist for his latest test results. Needless to say, they were not good and his doctor outlined his options on continuing treatment vs opting for just being pain free in the time he had left. His body was so weak and he was so tired he just could not endure any more. I slept in a recliner beside his hospital bed and watched my husband disappear inside the shell of the man he had been. There is no easy way to lose a loved one but this has to be one of the worst.

I would not assume this is a side effect of chemo. I'm not aware of any chemo drugs that cause hearing loss and since it started before chemo, I don't think it is chemo related. Has he been to a hearing specialist?

I saw an earlier post that mentioned this, but you might want to talk to his oncologist or try calling the American Cancer Society they have an 800 number and have people there 24 hours a day to help with any question we may have. Some side effects last for a few months and some longer, but I would talk to one of the above to find out what they have to say. Good Luck

Talk to his oncologist and consider a full hearing exam by an ENT. Even if the hearing loss is thought to temporary, hearing aids may help for a while.

Saw Oncologist yesterday. Petscan revealed small increase (.1cm) in lymph node and lung mass plus fluid around lung. We have appt. Monday for fluid to be drained and tested for cancer cells. Oncologist will discuss with Radiologist to determine if any radiation to area would help. While disappointed with results of test, I realize it could be so much worse and I have total faith in our doctors. His Oncologist keeps close watch on Al's condition and he listens to her more than anyone. I have been leaving him home alone for a few hours this week and find my anger is diminishing. I have found reading others experiences on this site to be very helpful.
Al is still having difficulty eating due to loss of taste but seems to be doing a little better.
