Hi. Diagnosed with head & Neck squeamish cell carcinoma Feb, 2018. Finished 6 cistplatin/35 radiation June 12. Went through okay (I guess) Still appetite issues because of 50% taste buds, Sore throat is annoying, and a little scary (Is this new Cancer???) ENT docs say that it's not...it just looks like a throat that has recently had 35 radiation treatments and should gradually heal, it just takes time. What bothers me is neck, throat, cheeks and mouth lymphedema and swelling. Looks like I have a major goiter under my chin when I wake up. Was prescribed edema treatments at UCSD and the VA got me a head & Neck compression vest and head-gear that I use daily and it helps...plus doing exercises (EEEEE's, OOOOOHH's, and AAAAHHH's, and puffing cheeks 10 times as much as I can stand or remember daily) Believe it or not, it seems to be helping. It just seems to me that there is SOMETHING that can be done about this down the road. Just living with is not a satisfactory option idea for me right now. I don't know maybe I'm overly vain about this, but I really don't like looking like I've stuffed my face and neck full of water balloons. ("Well, at least you've been pronounced FREE of any signs of Cancer!" is assuring and I'm grateful, but in my mind, I can see this looking like 'The Elephant Man' if it's not taken care of) Maybe I should be happy that it's just a swaddle under my chin and not a 'snood' over my beak (Look it up). Anyway, it's only been a little over 3 months since treatments ended, So, onward and forward, we'll see what develops. The whole thing is...just don't quit and give up taking care of yourself. Hang in there. I've got a feeling, ultimately the reward will be worth it in ways never thought of.

How many treatments have you had? I had 25 during my last diagnosis, 30 years ago I had 28 to my chest/neck/throat, during both of them I had the raw throat, couldn't eat, it hurt so bad eating or drinking. Miracle mouthwash helps. Chloraseptic spray helped me a little too. What issues are you having?

I had 35 radiation and 6 Cistplatin infusions, the last being June this year. Still have sore throat and swelling in throat, neck, mouth, and face. I can eat and drink, but have to be careful not to swallow too fast. The lymphedema is uncomfortable, unsettling, and depressing. Hanging in to stay vigilante with treating and hoping for the best. You were treated 30 years ago, then it came back recently?

    Hi Charcity18,
Hope things are going well for you. I'd be interested in possibly comparing challenges dealing with (our) head & Neck Squamous. I just finished radiation and chemo June 12 and some after effects are happening and freaking me out a little. It be nice to touch base with someone who can relate. Thanks
