I sold insurance for 10 years and yes, it's common to deny anyone that has a serious health problem for individual coverage. Groups will cover you, but only for small amounts usually. There are some companies that will cover you after 5 years for limited amounts, or after 10 years for more.

The policies that are advertised on TV will only be for maybe 10,000 or less and they usually will not cover you for the first year or two, then the benefits increase each year until you reach the full 10,000 (or however much the policy is).

You will just have to make several calls and ask if they have any policy that will cover someone in your condition.

I keep getting AARP life insurance applications. I finally sent their stuff back with a message not to send them to me anymore. I was denied because of diabetes. I hate to think of what my family will go through when I dies because there is no money. They only want to insure the healthy people so they can collect their monthly premiums.

Another approach would be to start a savings account to be put towards burial costs. You can also check into funeral costs and plan for something simple. Cremation is the cheapest thing, and you can always have a service at a church or a senior center to keep from renting a room at a funeral home. I've been noticing that some people have no service or nothing announced to the general public or are often just having graveside services rather than having visitation in a funeral home.

The older I get, the less people I think need to come to my funeral, so I'm OK with just immediate family at the graveside.
