Clinical Trial (Other): When the CT and CA-125 revealed that my primary peritoneal cancer had returned last February, both the oncologist and surgeon said that surgery was not recommended. More chemo was my only hope. Now that I have finished 6 cycles of chemo and the CT does still show some signs of cancer, both the oncologist and surgeon are recommending surgery. I'm confused. What has changed? Answers I have gotten: 1) Chemo is not ever going to stop the cancer, only put me in remission and each remission will be shorter than the previous 2) the accumulation of chemo will increase the side effects until they are unbearable 3) I have recovered very well after all surgeries 4) they call be a "tough bird" 5) adding the HIPEC procedure to the surgery could have very beneficial results 6) I will be part of a clinical trial so hopefully that will help others. I have decided to go ahead with the surgery with HIPEC.

i, too, have primary peritoneal. i have asked about the HIPEC procedure - but hasn't been an option for me yet. I'm on my 3rd chemo - a trial at Mayo now. Topotecan and a PARP inhibitor. only been through one cycle so far. I wish you luck with the HIPEC procedure. May I ask where you are having that done at? I don't think many places do that procedure.

Has anyone had experience with HIPEC surgery after a return of ovarian/primary peritoneal?

I was hoping to last year when my doctor had to fix a hernia on my incision. I hadn't had a recurrence but he wanted to do since he was going to have me open. Unfortunately the insurance company wouldn't approve it. Just last month he had to do a exploratory surgery on me because my CA level went to 91 even though my ct scan was clean. Found 6 tiny cells that were cancerous. He removed them but now on preventative chemo. Wish I could of had the hipec. If you have the chance to and insurance pays, I say do it. Sounds amazing to me. Good luck and God Bless.

Thank you for responding. I have Medi-care and have been told it is covered. I see the HIPEC oncologist for the consult tomorrow. Will update more after that.

Primary Peritoneal--Why is it constantly confused with ovarian? I have had a relapse after 14 months in remission. After one treatment of

I was diagnosed with unknown primary with ovarian as second primary and peritoneal cancer also listed right under that. In my case it had to do with the ovarian spreading to the peritoneal covering of the abdominal organs.

Intestinal blockage can be a problem after abdominal surgery. I have had several surgeries for ovca and have had 2 obstructions. I now take Miralax every day. From what I've been told, surgery leaves adhesions which pull your insides a little (or a lot) off one way or another. And that can be enough to cause a problem. I haven't heard that it has anything to do with chemo but I could be wrong.

Ironically, I just was diagnosed with a recurrence after 14 months NED also. It has now spread to my chest and liver area. I hope your chemo results in you being NED again. If you ask your doctor these 2 questions, I'd be curious to hear what he or she says. Good luck!

Thank you. Our cases sound very much alike. I see my doctor tomorrow and will ask about Miralax. So far I haven't been told that the cancer has spread. Hoping that more Chemo will put me back into remission.
