    KLHolt asked a questionLung Cancer

My sister went this morning for blood work, her red blood cell count was very low so they told her to basically be quarantined at home.

It was probably her white blood cells that were low and yes, this is completely normal. As SueRae said, you can get shot of Neupogen which will put your bone marrow into overdrive producing more white blood cells. Another medicine used for this is neulasta. I received both of these which were administered to me at my treatment center.

When my White count dropped I was on home quarrantine. Always hoped that it would not drop to the level of quarrantine. If I thought it was dropping I would get someone to take me for a ride down to Lake Michigan the day before lab check so I had something inspiring to think about. Completley normal. Mine dropped enough times that they had to revamp my chemo dosages and then frequency. I could not get Neupogen because of the protocol I was on.

My white count dropped to 300, I was put on quarantine. I have also had 4 transfusions for severe anemia. I went to chemo last week. I was told my white count was too low again. I am scheduled for this week and i will receive a shot of neulasta to encourage the bone marrow to make more white cells. It is not unusual that chemo adversely affects your bood counts. Most of the time they can manage this with transfusions or shots depending on which blood count is low.
