Ahhh yes, the "cough" pillow. I had one of those when I had a "staging surgery" in 1988. I realized why they gave it to me the first time I had to cough. WOW!! Hope your doing well.

Procedure or Surgery (Breast Reconstruction (Flap)): After my mastectomy, I had immediate breast reconstruction with a DIEP flap. Mastectomy plus reconstruction was supposed to take about 9 hours, but I had a complication so it took 12. I stayed in the hospital for five days. When I left, I had four drains, about 10 extra pounds of fluid, and was completely unable to stand up straight. At home, I couldn't lay flat, so I slept in a recliner for weeks. I had to have help with just about everything. But little by little, things improved. I slowly regained energy, the drains were removed, and eventually I was standing up straight again. It's been three months since the surgeries, and I'm feeling great. My breasts don't exactly match in size, I still have some areas that are really hard, and there are large pale circles where my nipples used to be, my stomach area is still numb (but very flat), the tummy scar stretches completely across my abdomen, and I don't have any feeling in my breasts or nipples - but I'm still happy I chose to go this route.

You can go for more surgery to make sure the breasts match right?? My surgery is in July and my surgeon told me 3 months after the original surgery you go back for some "tweaks" to perfect them....

Procedure or Surgery (Double Mastectomy): I had a double mastectomy and then immediate reconstruction. The two surgeries were estimated to take 9 hours but I had a complication and had to have three more hours. I stayed 5 days in the hospital. I think if I had only had the mastectomies, I would've recovered more quickly. But with the DIEP flap reconstruction, where they use your own tissue to rebuild breast mounds, I slowly recovered, and at 8 weeks finally feel pretty much back to normal. Well, the new normal.
