I'm so sorry you're going through all this. From what I learned, most cervical cancers are slow growing. But there is an aggressive one, that's what I had, too. Like you, my oncologists didn't recommend surgery either. This is how they explained it to me, maybe it will help your kids understand:
Certain cervical cancers and stages require different types of treatment. Surgery is indicated in lesser stages and if the cancer is slow growing. The reason they don't recommend surgery first for aggressive strains is that the patient needs to recover from surgery before getting started on chemo/radiation. They say it's better to get started with chemo/radiation to attack the cancer in a general way, rather than specifically trying to cut it out, missing some of the tumor, then waiting for the body to heal before starting chemo/rad. When the cancer is aggressive you just don't have the time to wait for recovery because those cells can spread a lot while you're waiting.
I hope that makes sense and helps your kids get a better understanding as to why your doctors are recommending what they are.
Love & Light,
Laurie
