Celebration (Other): Very suspicious spot between my toes (black, irregular) turned out to be a fungal infection and not melanoma. Whew!

Procedure or Surgery (Mohs surgery): I've had 5 Mohs procedures now, so I pretty much know what to expect. The first one was the hardest, since I had 3 large tumors and one in a very sensitive location. It was close to my eye but my surgeon did a great job. I considered plastic surgery but it healed quite nicely with very little scarring. The main thing I would say is don't ignore the warning signs like I did being stubborn and hard-headed. All those thousands of hours in the sun really do take their toll. Now I wear long sleeves, long pants and use SPF 30 (at least) religiously. I don't have the tan I used to, but if I can get through this 6 month checkup without a new lesion, the doc says we can go on a one year plan ! Yippee!

If you do have Mohs, be prepared; it is time-consuming as the pathology is done in the office after each surgery procedure. It's kind of like the military, hurry up and wait! Make plans to spend half a day (at least) in the doctor's office, but it's worth the wait. The surgery wounds take about 6 weeks to heal so be patient with the healing process as well. Overall, it's not that bad.
