I just had my 6th surgery in 2 1//2 years and have never had an infection. I do have implants in both breasts. The cancer side is all implant of course (I didn't have tissue expanders first) and my other side was lifted and a small implant inserted. I've had both sides replaced, not due to problems with the implants. It was due to symmetry which is tough with a unilateral.

Breast implant infection

from @Lindasch--I did ask my plastic surgeon who is taking care of the fills in my expanders and will replace the expanders Memorial weekend in May; His words "Yes, infection is a risk, that's a fact", and "If there is infection with the expanders in place, it does look very red". I said "RED?" the photo I saw of a woman with infection with her expanders inplace looked horrible, scarey. He reassured me that my breast expanders and breasts looked very good and to keep up with cleansing and he recommends any cocoa butter or bodybutter that has silicone in it for scar management. He emphasized the silicone. So, ask my doctor must be my answer. Thanks to all who responded!

I had my first infection two weeks after reconstruction - had 104 fever, rash and inflamed left breast. I spent 3 days in the hospital and finally came home with a pick line and was hooked up to antibiotics 24/7. Felt fine and then 3 weeks go by and I get another fever, swollen and red breast so I end up in the hospital for 5 days. As of today I am still on antibiotics - all to save my breasts! Just when u think u are finished this kind of thing happens. Still don't know what the infection is or how I got it.....
Very frustrating!

Loss (Lost loved one): Having lost one sweet cousin to ovarian cancer in 2009, we just lost another to ovarian last week. I survived in 2000 from the same cancer, and another cousin has survived her ovarian cancer from 2011 so far. It's just so painful when someone you care very much about looses her life to something similar to what I survived. I just don't know how to express my feelings!

Side Effects (Weight gain): I am horrified at gaining so much weight, and now I have a daunting problem of loosing it. It's not easy.
