I'm happy that you wrote Dina. We tend to give Chemo all the credit. You only had Radiation, and your sense of smell is heightened. Could it be just the Radiation causing it, or maybe it's both. Is there an article about this?

Suzebaron- sorry it's taken so long for me to reply. I have seen no articles on breast cancer radiation and food smell issues. When I was undergoing rad and explained all of this to my rad onco, she said to me that if she didn't know better, she would think I was in chemo - it was that bad. I think that radiation has become marginalized - (you ONLY had to do radiation!) - when it is different for everyone. My radiation oncologist had never seen someone experience such major SEs. And to have them years later SUCKS. And I know it's a lot of ongoing anxiety on my part - a conditioned response.

I recently came across a blog post on CURE: Food Anxiety - How Cancer Changed the Way I Eat - it really hit home for me, and I re-written it as a journal piece for myself. But worth reading: https://www.curetoday.com/community/sarah-debord/2019/04/food-anxiety-how-cancer-changed-the-way-i-eat. (If that link doesn't post here, just Google "CURE Food Anxiety - How Cancer Changed the Way I Eat"

Within the post, the author references another post worth reading as well.

Thanks all for sharing your experiences. It is nice to know there are others out there experiencing this side effect as well. My oncologist is very good and has always been aware of other "uncommon" side effects when I shared with her, but she had never heard of this heightened sense of smell. Heightened smell still present but some days I get some relief, so hopefully subsiding.

One feature we have on the site that makes it easy to find information that you need is the Experiences tab at the top of any page. This page lists all of the things that people have mentioned that they have had done, drugs taken, surgery they have had, etc. While you're waiting for some others to answer this you can click on that tab and then enter tamoxifen in the search box and you will see all of the posts where tamoxifen has been mentioned.

For me, I had heat rash, hot flashes and weight gain around the middle, especially during my first year. Now the heat rash is gone; hot flashes aren't as bad, and sadly the weight is still there. :( Of course, that's just me; you may not have any side effects. Hope this pill works well for you. HUGS and God bless.

It will get better. For me the hot flashes were bad too. I'm finishing out year number 2 on it and those are now subsiding. The way my doctor said it was the way you handle the hot flashes will change. Knowing triggers helps. Also I found that some peppermint oil on the base of my neck under my hair worked wonders. You can feel the cooling! Such a relief. I did gain weight too (some of that self inflicted telling myself I could eat things because "I've had cancer") More difficult was my emotional state. I couldn't figure out why I would cry at the drop of a hat. After breaking down in the doctor's office one day, they said that could be a side effect. I started seeing a counselor which has really helped. Had I known that ahead of time, I think things would have been much different. And like I said 2 years later things are better, I started working out again and have lost about 15 pounds since the beginning of the year. Best of luck!
