If the white spots are vitiligo, that can be a sign in a melanoma patient that the immune system is gearing up to battle a recurrence of melanoma. Oncologists who treat melanoma patients with interluekin-2, a kind of immunotherapy, have noticed that one if its side effects is that, as it boosts the immune system, it can cause vitiligo - white patches. Not all dermatologists know this connection between vitiligo and melanoma, so I suggest that you see an oncologist who specializes in melanoma.

When I asked my doc for prognosis, he didn't give one and said "you're one individual" and your circumstances are different from others in the compilation of people they get the prognoses from so he wouldn't give me a %. I am stage IV from stage IA. Had a mole removed, Stage IA in 2012. It changed while I was pregnant with my now 2 year old. It was a mole I had forever. Then, not even a year later, in April of this year, I was diagnosed with Stage IV. My nodes were clean in 2012 so it spread through my blood to my hip bone. The tumor broke my pelvis and acetabulum. Had a complete hip replacement and then some. Not sure if everything was removed from my hip but there is a spot on my rib which grew slightly from April to June. I'm on treatment now, Ipi, and had radiation for my hip. Almost done with the Ipi. I just want the disease to disappear. I guess I'll take 5 yrs NED at a time if that's the best case scenario. Just want some time to breathe in between bouts if this disease will be with me forever. That's what scares me about melanoma the most….will it spread and where to. If it goes to my brain, I'm not sure how I will handle it. This is my scariest case scenario. I don't even want to think about it. Anyway, my doc told me to look at it like someone having heart disease or diabetes….just another disease to stay on top of. I just hope we can stay on top of it. In the meantime of staying on top of it….sometimes the treatment can be debilitating…and I guess this is the price we have to pay to live. Some people are in jail…I guess we have a cancer that doesn't go away…it's a sentence to me. But I do try to stay positive, but you know…we all go to the dark side at times. Anyway…I remember life w/o this worry and I consider that "freedom"!!!!
