OMG, are you saying that your cancer has returned? I will be cancer free for 5 years the end of March and this message from you certainly got my attention and wondering what happened if it has infact returned.

I will be cancer free for 5 years the end of March...my drs diagnosed my cancer from severe acid reflux for many, many years. I did drink on a regular basis but didn't consider myself an alcholic...have only had one drink since I was diagnosed. Unfortunately, the smoking, is a totally different story. I quit for a long time and definitely could not smoke going through treatments and surgery. However, being a smoker for almost 40 years, and living in an environment of family members all with some type of addiction, along with my mother having alzhiemers, I have started back again, strictly in the closet, less than 10 per day...not proud of it, but have. Anyone relate and maybe could give me some advice?

May I ask what was your symptoms for you to go to doctor and what stage? My husband did have acid reflux, but not on a regular basis; which is why it floored us. I pray that you stay cancer free ; wishing you and your family blessings.

I dont smoke and neither does my husband; he doesnt even drink....I have heard from people who have quit that its one of the hardest things to do. If you can beat cancer, you can quit smoking. I do have faith in god and pray many times a day ; maybe that could help.

Actually, the only symptons I had was a sore throat..believe it or not. I had it for about 3-4months, I had been on prilosec for many, many years, so the dr tried several different other acid reflux meds which none of them worked, he then ordered a CT scan, which came back with some abnormalities and then I had an endoscopy which they found a tumor, stage 4, in my esophagus. Yep, I keep telling myself the same thing about the smoking issue and like you have a tremendous amount of faith in God and keep praying for his assistant in trying to quit and I truly appreciate your prayers!!!!!

Stay strong...easy for me to say because I am currently getting ready to celebrate my 4 yr cancer free date the end of March, but it was a long, long battle. Went through very agressive chemo, 6 weeks of daily radiation, then reconstruction surgery of the esophagus, I was originally diagnosed with stage 4 cancer but only had one tumor. PLEASE...let me know if there are any questions that I can possibly answer for you. God Bless and stay strong....

Thanks so much Lovspuds. I do have some questions. Would like to know if side affects get worse as the weeks of chemo /radiation continue ??? He has had 10 radiation treatments and 1 chemo. He gets radiation every week for. 5 weeks and chemo once a week. For now, his only side effect is he's really tired, but he also has dialysis 3 times a week for 3 hrs each. Also, how long were u hospitalized for surgery? And how long did u have feeding tube?? Thanks do much .

I had radiation treatments 5 days a week for 6 weeks, worse side effects were exhaustion and my skin literally got sunburned and raw. I had double chemo treatments for a week long period, meaning, 3 hrs at cancer center than had to wear a pack home during the night. They gave me a break between the chemo of three weeks and then another round of same. Extreme nausea, mouth sores, hair fell out, fingernails and toenails fell off, very bad. What is he having the dialysis for? I also had to go in a couple times for dehydration and get fluids because I could not keep anything down. When I went in for my surgery, I was there for 2 1/2 weeks, put on feeding tube in the hospital and only had to use it for about 2 weeks after I got home, even though they told me it would be 6-8 weeks.. Mainly because I hated it and started making myself eat small amounts of food 5-6 times day to get off it. Please keep in mind that I was very blessed, I literally was diagnosed early and only had one tumor located in the center of my esophagus and no other areas were affected, so with all the treatments it shrunk the tumor and the reconstruction was done to ensure there were no other cells possible left to be infected. Hope this helps..please let me know if you have any further questions.
