Ive recently just moved to Utah changing my care to Huntsman cancer institute. I am very happy with choice, but on other hand scared to death left all my family and friends..and now Dr here thinking of taking me off Herceptin that I've been on for 2 years now Dr. in Florida said I would be on indefinetly ...My cancer was stage iv and overwhelmed my left breast in 3 weeks... he said they would watch me closely and when or if it came back they would put me back on herceptin . I am so scared of it coming back I fought so hard to get thru this ...will I catch it in time if it comes back without being on herceptin? anyone with any info would be appreicated....

I am still on herceptin but my plan is to stop after 1 year. Unfortunately the drug is still too new for there to be any long term studies weighing the risks vs benefits of continuing it for a longer period of time. I hope you have had your heart monitored closely for the time you have been on herceptin. In any case, cancer can recur with or without herceptin and catching a recurrence quickly really doesn't have anything to do with whether you continue on herceptin.

I agree with nancyjac. I was on for one year and my biggest concern was my heart and how it would do. Please make sure to have your doctor checking that while you are on herceptin. I do understand your fear. I know I still have concerns and little things trigger the fear; I try not to let it consume me but for everyone on this journey each step is different and their own, not anyone else's.

My Oncologist has me on Herceptin for a total of 1 year with a heart Echo every 3 months. I did not know that it was given for more than 12 months. It is scary to think about going off as it is my last "attachment" to treatment.
