I had a lumpectomy on May 20 and learned the cancer is widespread in the right side, so mastectomy is the only choice there. I'm going for bilateral because I don't want to have to worry about doing all of this again. The left side will be prophylactic surgery. I'm comfortable with the decision and am checking into options for reconstruction tomorrow. Hope this helps.

Like the others who had cancer in one breast but choose a bilateral, I knew I did not want to go through this again. Originally I had the option of lumpectomy or mastectomy on my right breast. Who my BRCA results came back positive I immediately choose the bilateral with such s high risk of a second breast cancer. Easy decision for me that I do not regret one bit.

Like many of the women who have already commented, I had multiple tumors in the right breast and chose to do a double mastectomy. I don't regret it at all because I have more peace of mind. Ironically, the healthy left side is the one that ended up getting infected, and then the expander began to leak. But, it all turned out okay. I just had my final reconstruction surgery with silicone implants yesterday and have no regrets. I haven't been able to look at the final results yet. I'm choosing not to get the nipple reconstruction. I'm just ready to be done with it all.
