The chemo wasnt working on me and my myeloma was more than 60 percent of my body. I also had some chromosonal abnormalities and that is why they did a tandem. I currently do a very small amount of work with a drug company and at the last meeting a nurse mentioned that intense chemo could be the same as a transplant. I am not a dr nor do I know your situation. I am currently taking velcade, revlamid and solunedrol and it is keeping my myeloma at bay but not gone. I thought I would give you my current situation to help. Since you live in Chicago, there is the Northwestern hosp support group , Northbrrooks Wellness Center or Hinsdale and Palatine have wellness centers. They have helped me alot. Hope this helps.

Thanks Maria, any information is helpful, I appreciatte it, my Myeloma case also involves a syndrome called POEMS and creates neuropathy, I had a second opinion at Northwestern that just confirmmed it. I will look at their support groups, perhaps they can help. Thanks a million, wishing you the best for this 2013.

    Hi Antolin,
I had tandem stem cell transplants in 07. They involve alot of patience and just being gentle to yourself . I walked everyday I was in the hospital and it seemed to help. It is uncomfortable and scary especially the first time. I actually found a woman who walked me through each step as she had just completed them . It did make it so much easier for me. I would try and find a support group or even just one person. It changed how I felt walking into the hospital.

Thanks for your reply and suggestions Maria, do you know how or why your Tandem transplant recommended? My plasma cells are at 7% in the last reading (about 3 weeks ago) and I was told so far that only one transplant will take place, I am just curious about how the oncologists decide between one transplant or a tandem? I will try to find a local group, but my search online only came up with whatnext so I am not sure if there's much of a Chicago Myeloma patients support group.

I have multiple myeloma and have been in treatment for almost six years. I had tandem stem cell transplants five years ago. I continue doing chemo today.
