Procedure or Surgery (Fluid removed from lung): My brother-in-law was admitted to the hospital with horrible pneumonia, and after all tests and treatments, he was told about his diagnosis. He has become very depressed, even though in many ways he is so much better. He will not eat very much, will not try to get out of bed without urging, does not show any interest in life. He has been out of the hospital for 5 days and is scheduled to start chemo in 2 days--but we don't know if he will be strong enough to visit the clinic. In a few weeks, he has become a shell of a man.

Oh No (Diagnosed): I have, in effect, become one of the main support persons as my brother-in-law and his wife come to grips with this cancer. My sister-in-law looks to me for advice and guidance, but I have to be careful not to make her feel that she isn't doing the right things. My personality is more aggressive, and I would be stronger in asking questions of doctors regarding treatment, patient's condition, etc. She tends to wait for the doctor to tell HER, and if he doesn't, she simply lets the matter drop.
