Procedure or Surgery (Lumpectomy): At the time of my surgery all that was known was the location and size of my tumor. I had lumpectomy and sentinel node biopsy. The surgery was not very difficult for me even though I had never had surgery or a serious illness or injury before. I trusted my surgeon and basically put everything in his hands and it went well. The nodes looked good so an axillary dissection was not performed. One of the sentinel nodes had a 1mm (tiny) metastasis. What weearned was that the tumor was an aggressive type, fast growing and Her2 positive with some Estrogen component although not enough to meet criteria for Estrogen positive. Although my mom also had a her2 positive breast cancer my genetic testing was negative. My surgery was performed the tuesday before thanksgiving. My first chemotherapy on Christmas Eve.

Oh No (Diagnosed): My mom died of breast cancer and was diagnosed around the same age as I was. I knew I was at increased risk but didnt think it would happen to me. I found a lump in my breast and learned that I had the same type of cancer, same breast, same age. Only my cancer was found at an earlier stage and medicine has advanced quite a bit in 17 yrs. I hope I have a better chance.
