Other Care (Self Care - Immunity): I couldn't get rid of a bad cold for 6 months as I was going through my lumpectomy and getting ready for chemotherapy. So, I took some time off to build my immunity and get a nutritionist. Here's what I did.
Build gut health with probiotics and prebiotics.
    Switched to a vegan diet.
    Juiced with a masticating juicer.
    Use wheatgrass. 2 - 2 oz shots a day.
Mass doses of Vitamin C. Look for the Vitamin C Protocol.
    Drink green and black tea.
You can increase blood cells with bee pollen. Get it whole
    rather than in pills.
    Raw garlic - 2-3 cloves/day.
    Used a good multi-vitamin
Sprouts. I grew them and bought some in the grocery store.
vegetables, vegetables, vegetables. Giant salads with lots of
    herbs, lemon, olive oil
Use turmeric - Make Golden Milk. It's good. Add in raw
    chocolate.
Used spices LIBERALLY - whole plants of oregano, basil, thyme, rosemary, parsley, pepper.
    Start using Himalayan salt.
Make bone-vegetable broth and drink it regularly. Boil
dandelion and all the greens you can + parsnip, carrots, whole
onions, sweet potatoes. Don't peel anything.
Get some Ojibwa Tea or Essiac Tea
Make sure you are eliminating properly. If you aren't, figure out
how too (magnesium glycinate and smooth move can help but
as you start building better gut health, you will find it gets better)
Eat organic and RBST free cows that make your dairy. Bovine drugs get into you and kill your gut flora. This is emerging science and is being linked to everything from autism in children, cancer, and alzhymers in seniors.
There's more, will have to be in a later post.

Side Effects (Fatigue/Pitting Edema/Weight Gain): I am 1.5 years out from my last radiation treatment that followed chemotherapy. I have extreme fatigue, pitting edema, and I'm becoming obese. I have gone from a size 6 to a size 14. There is no explanation for these symptoms. SO - I found a Nutritionist who is going to fix it all. I'll let you know how it goes.

Have you seen your PCP about the weight gain. My PCP determines that it was probably a side effect of Lyrica prescribed by my neurologist. She also referred me to a nutritionist (insurance paid)

Doubtless a nutritionist can help you but the main thing to do is to eat fresh food. Try to ignore cans & boxes and head straight for the produce section wherever you shop. The packaged foods have so much sugar & salt added in and amazing varieties of those two things as well.

I became a near 100% raw & living food advocate prior to my diagnosis and stuck with it for years after recovery. I still eat much of my food uncooked for better nutritive value. I even wrote ebooks on how to do it.

The extra weight alone can cause edema and put extra pressure on your heart. Fresh sweet fruit, in moderation, wont set you back. At minimum, fresh produce is your good friend. Some people go for a ketogenic diet (fresh with meat) which is fantastic if you go with organically grown and grass fed or foraging critters to eat. You do not want antibiotics (from feed) running around from the animal's system to your own. Same reasoning regarding produce & pesticides.

The fatigue can be countered slowly with baby steps for movement. I can easily walk 5-6 miles at a stretch now (okay, a long stretch with bathroom breaks) in a couple of hours or so. While I was ill, it took me all afternoon to walk 3 miles when I was up to it. My first physical challenge, after treatment, was with a vacuum. Once I could manage that I went to the gym for a struggle to stay on an eliptical machine for two whole minutes. With time I got stronger and did more things to make me stronger.

The weight & exhaustion is easy to put onto treatment. You now have a greater variety of choices in how & what to do to recover. Better eating, slow re entry into society, yoga, weight bearing exercises ... even plain deep & regular breathing is a help.

      Feel better soon.
